2 Ways to Turn Off S Mode on a Windows 11 PC
Windows 11 S Mode restricts app installations to the Microsoft Store for security. If you need to install third-party apps, you must turn off S Mode in Windows 11. Follow these two methods to disable it.
Method 1: Using Your Microsoft Account
Step 1: Open Settings
- Click the Start menu and select Settings, or press ⊞ Win+I.
Step 2: Access Activation Settings
- Go to System > Activation.
- If your device is in S Mode, it will say “Windows 11 Home in S Mode.”
Step 3: Switch Out of S Mode
- Click “Go to the Store” under the “Switch to Windows 11 Pro” section.
- Do not click the Store link under “Upgrade your edition of Windows.”
Step 4: Get Out of S Mode
- On the Microsoft Store page, click “Get” on the “Switch out of S Mode” banner.
- Wait for confirmation that S Mode has been disabled.
Method 2: Without a Microsoft Account (Using UEFI Settings)
Step 1: Boot into Advanced Startup
- Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
- Click “Restart Now” next to “Advanced startup.”
- Confirm the restart.
Step 2: Access UEFI Firmware Settings
- Click “Troubleshoot” > “Advanced Options”.
- Select “UEFI Firmware Settings” and restart.
Step 3: Disable Secure Boot
- Find the Secure Boot option in the UEFI menu (location varies by manufacturer).
- Use arrow keys or mouse to disable Secure Boot.
- Apply changes and exit.
